David’s Bodybeast Results!

Welcome to my Body Beast Results blog!

I haven’t been this excited about a new workout since…… P90X2, Asylum and P90X. Okay, so maybe Beachbody makes incredible workouts but seriously, this one is AWESOME. And what makes it different than ALL the OTHERS is that it’s purely designed for building muscle and gaining mass with minimal equipment! You don’t need a gym full of olympic-sized weights, squat rats, leg presses and bench presses.

You can learn more about the Body beast workout by checking out my Bodybeast article. Here I’m going to share my results from doing Body Beast for 90 days.

Can you really gain 10 lbs of muscle in 90 days?

The Bodybeast program claims that you can gain 10 lbs of muscle 90 days. Is that what I experienced? NO! I gained 10 lbs of muscle in 60 days! HAHA.. what I mean is that the first 2 phases of the Beast program are designed to add the mass. For the last 30 days, you’re actually ‘cutting’ the bodyfat by reducing calories and increasing cardio again. So while you gain bodyfat while gaining muscle during the first 2 phases, the goal is to have you back near your starting bodyfat at the end of 90 days, but with 10 lbs more of muscle.

So how were my Bodybeast Results? See for your self:

I’ve been told that my results are AMAZING and I’ve been asked by Beachbody to submit my photos to be potentially included in their infomercial.  But I can tell you that I am THRILLED with my results. I’ve worked out at the gym in years past and and I’ve NEVER gotten results like this in just 2-3 months!  Body beast is a world class program and it is VERY well designed — between the dynamic set training in the workouts to the nutrition plan. I’ve never gotten a pump in the muscles like this before!

And that’s why I’m moving right on to ROUND 2 !!!

5 Keys to My success:

A lot of people have been asking me for tips on how I got these kind of results. It really boils down to 4 things:

1) Embrace the nutrition guide and Track what you eat!

The Beast Book is one of the BEST I’ve seen for nutrition and it’s designed 100% to gain mass. Even the calorie recommendations take into account your BODYFAT. That’s the first workout I’ve seen that does this. I was a little skeptical about adhering to 25% protein / 50% carbs / 25% fat but I did and WOW, it worked well. I use Myfitnesspal.com and the iPhone app (with the bar-code scanner) to easily track what I eat each day. When it comes to building muscle, Sagi says nutrition is 100% of the equation. If you don’t eat enough, you WILL NOT gain mass!

2) Join our Support Group!

I host a Body Beast Challenge group on Facebook called “The Beast up Crew!” and we have a Voxer voice chat group. It’s a lot of fun to be doing this with others who know what you’re going through. We share meal ideas, supplement experience, progress photos and tips to encourage and push each other. You’re welcomed to join us! Sign up with a free team beachbody account with me as your coach and then join our Facebook group here.

3) Track your Workout progress

Using tracking sheets is a MUST during Bodybeast. There were many workouts where I increased just 5 lbs on a set but over 12-15 reps, that’s a lot more weight. If I didn’t have my tracking sheets to refer back to, I would have not been able to push myself a little more each workout. A friend of mine made some new tracking sheets that allow you to track 6 weeks worth of progress on each sheet. MUCH better than printing out 6 new Beachbody tracking sheets each week. Here is the Build Phase Tracking sheet and the Bulk Phase Tracking sheet.

4) Develop Mental Toughness

Gaining mass is NOT easy. It requires you to EAT more than you think you need. It requires you to push your muscles to the point of exhaustion! When your body says “stop!”, You have to say “NO! Keep going” until you have safely exhausted the muscle. THEN you will see growth. I’ve never felt my muscles burn like this before so I had to really learn to “embrace the burn” !

5) Take your Supplements!

Do you really think you’re going to grow 10 lbs of muscle in 90 days without Supplements?  There are 6 supplements I took the entire 90 days. Shakeology (not required to build muscle, I take it to be healthy), Cellcor C4 as my pre-workout (see my review here) and these 4 Beast Supplements:

Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake  - it’s a high quality whey protein plus digestive enzymes to help enhance protein utilization and reduce gas and bloating. I have this post-workout with the Beachbody Base Shake and Creatine. (see below).

Beachbody Fuel Shot - it instantly triggers an insulin response with its high glycemic index (GI), for more energy and faster recovery during and after workouts. It also has vital electrolytes to keep you hydrated and supports muscle mass growth with a higher calorie load than just P90X Results & Recovery Drink. You’re supposed to actually combine this with the BasesShake for your POST-workout recovery.

Beachbody MAX Creatine - Bodybeast recommends 10 grams of creatine daily. Why? It supports an increase in strength, muscle recovery, and muscle mass. I have 5g in the morning with my Shakeology and 5g in my post workout shake.

Beachbody Super Suma - THIS is the game changer! It helps enhance testosterone production and it supports protein synthesis for faster muscle repair. I have 1 pill in the morning with my Shakeology and 1 mid-after noon with water.

Les Mills Combat banner

Beachbody Les Mills Combat Pre-orders are available NOW! This will be my next workout after another round of Bodybeast, to help get me shredded again! If you’re interested in joining our Combat Challenge Group, send an email to David@symbioticfitness.com or add me on Facebook here or contact Kate@SymbioticFitness.com or add her on FB here.

What kind of workout is LES MILLS COMBAT?

Beachbody’s LES MILLS COMBAT has moves from karate, taekwondo, boxing, muay thai/kickboxing, capeoira, and jiu jitsu that are combined into escalating sequences. You’ll go from controlled moves to dynamic power moves, and then building to high-speed combs. As the workouts increase in intensity, you fire all the energy systems in your body for the greatest calorie burn both during and after your workout. That means bodyfat loss and body sculpting for your ultimate transformation.

But why is Les Mills Combat so effective?

The secret is Fast Twitch Integration Training—a blend of the most dynamic moves from 6 different martial arts disciplines, combined in explosive, escalating patterns. This works your fast-twitch muscle fibers—they’re the ones with the greatest capacity for change—like crazy! You’ll be burning massive amounts of calories during your workouts and continue burning calories even after your workouts, so you’ll amp up strength and maximize lean muscle definition.

Can beginners do it and what is it like?

I got to do this workout LIVE with the trainers (Dan and Rachel) at a recent Beachbody leadership event! I have to say it was FUN (because of the music, the trainers and intensity) BUT they had modified moves for beginners too. I personally LIKED some of the advanced moves — jumping and kicking but this is also a program that you can do when you’re just starting out. At the beginning of each section, they show you how to do the move and they also have basic-beginner moves. Here’s a pic I snapped from the workout LIVE:

How to Improve Your Pull ups (Video)

I started P90X only able to do 3 pull-ups but by the end of 90 days, I was able to do 16. But for some people, they still struggle to even do 1 pull-up. I get asked a lot for tips to improve pull-ups so I decided to put together a video that gives the basics on how to do pull-ups properly and how to improve them. You can incorporate these tips for improving pull-ups into P90X but if you’re not doing P90X, I also included a routine that you can use three times a week.

Add muscle with the new BODY BEAST workout!

Do you want to add 10 lbs of lean muscle in 90 days?

It’s here and it’s awesome.  Bodybeast is the newest workout from the makers of P90X, that is all about adding SIZE and gaining mass!    P90X was designed to strip away body fat and to help people get toned. Bodybeast is fully designed from the ground up to gain mass!

What are the benefits of Body beast?

  • The program is proven to add 10 lbs of muscle in 90 days (!!)
  • It’s the first complete body-building program designed to be done at home
  • It uses dynamic set training to allow amazing muscle growth with lighter weights
  • Bodybeast recommends all natural supplements and whole foods, not harmful chemicals.
  • A  nutrition plan that is laid out clearly to help eat the right foods to support muscle growth
I don’t know about you but I am pretty excited about a program that can add 10 lbs of muscle in 90 days, at home, without a set of Olympic weights and squat rack!

Who’s the trainer in Bodybeast, Sagi Kalev?bodybeast-Sagi-Kalev-

Straight from Wikipedia:

After a four-year tour of duty in the Israeli Army, including participation in Operation Desert Storm, Sagi resumed his weightlifting and bodybuilding interests, capturing two “Mr.

Israel” titles in the process, as well as his college education, graduating with a degree in physical education and a minor in nutrition from the University of Central Florida. Kalev has earned his certifications in some of the top fitness and nutrition fields from PROPTA as Certified Nutrition Specialist CNS*, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, PROPTA Master Professional Personal Trainer, and Certified Metabolic Typing Advisor. Sagi Kalev is the Senior Director of PROPTA, the World Leading Personal Trainers Certification agency certifying personal trainers and nutritionists in Texas. Kalev was recently inducted in the PROPTA hall of fame for his dedication and loyalty to the PROPTA and the fitness industry.

I actually got to meet Sagi at the annual Beachbody Summit and he’s a really nice guy. He’s not just big, he is really smart and educated on nutrition. He doesn’t advocate caffeine or mass-gainer shakes… he really emphasizes natural whole foods!

Not only did I get to meet him, I’m friends with him on Facebook and he’s in our Bodybeast Challenge group!! So now we’re getting advice straight from the Beast himself!

What workout equipment do I need for Body Beast?

The good news is, you will NOT need olympic sized weights — you won’t be doing any flat-bench with a bar, just dumbbells when flatbench. You’ll also use dumbbells and the ezcurl bar when doing incline and flys.

You’ll need 3 things to do Bodybeast successfully at home:

  1. A bench that can lay flat or incline. Beachbody sells a really nice one from Powerblock for a pretty good price.  Check Craigslist too.
  2. A set of dumbbells — I recommend dumbbells that range from 10-50 lbs at minimum, and up to 90 lbs if you’re serious.  Check out my Boxflex 552 and 1090 review video.
  3. An ez-curl bar with plated weights — Check Craigslist for a deal, if you can’t find one, Beachbody actually has a really good deal for an 11lb bar + 85lbs of weight for $129 + shipping. You can purchase the Ez-Curl Bar and Weights here.

What’s the Bodybeast schedule like?

Below is a photo of the body beast schedule.  Basically it is sectioned off in 3 phases called “Blocks”. Overall a 12 Week program designed to gain mass and get huge.

Body Beast Schedule

The First Block is the BUILD
3 Weeks / 6 Days / 1 Rest

The Second Block is the BULK
6 Weeks / 6 Days / 1 Rest

The Third Block is the BEAST!

What is the Bodybeast Nutrition Plan like?

I’ve never seen a more comprehensive, yet easy to follow nutrition plan designed for adding muscle! Not only is it based on how much you weigh and how active you are (like every other calorie formula), it also takes into account how much bodyfat you’re starting with! At the start of  each phase, you re-calculate your bodyfat and calorie goal! This is to ensure you’re not over-eating and gaining a bunch of fat.

What are the Bodybeast supplements?

The Bodybeast program was designed with 4 supplements in mind:

  1. A high quality protein
  2. Creatine
  3. Fuel Shot (similar to the P90X Recovery drink)
  4. Super Suma (this is a real game changer!).
BodyBeast_SuperSuma

We’ve seen the first 3 supplements before and I highly recommend that you get them or a good alternative,  but I’m most excited about the Super Suma, which is designed to aid the body’s natural ability to produce testosterone. It is NOT an artificial steroid per-cursor, this is an all natural plant steril.  In my opinion, this one is worth EVERY penny! You can get it on auto-ship and get free shipping, for only $29.95/month by clicking here.

Called “the Russian secret,” because it has been taken by Russian Olympic athletes for many years to stimulate muscle growth, control appetite by regulating blood sugar levels and boost endurance, Suma root, though mistakenly called “Brazilian Ginseng” (it does not belong to the Ginseng family) has far greater medicinal properties and reported health benefits than any variety of Ginseng.

Indigenous to the rain forests of the Amazon Basin of South America, Suma root, derived from the base of the Suma vine has for hundreds of years been used for its ability to heal wounds, balance blood sugar levels, strengthen muscles, relieve chronic pain and inflammation, improve low energy and sexual libido, stimulate circulation, reduce tumors, stabilize blood pressure and for treating conditions such as diabetes, skin problems, and tumors. Proponents of Suma assert that it promotes the body’s ability to adapt to stress and works as a harmonizing agent that restores and boosts the immune system.

If you want a more detailed review of the Body Beast Supplements, check out my buddy Jake’s review – he nails it!

David’s P90X Gaining MASS Blog

Welcome to my Round 2 Gaining MASS Blog!

Check out my results video below!!

Week 13 Update:
Here’s how I ended up:

Weight: 188.5 lbs (up .3 lbs this week)
Body fat: 10.4%

Week 12 Update:

Weight: 188.2 lbs (up .4 lbs this week)
Body fat: 10.06% (back in line with what I thought after last week)
Daily Calories: 3800
Ratios: 40% / 40% / 20% — 380 g protein / 380 g carb / 84.4 g fat

So for week 12, I’ve gained only .4 lbs in total weight, but my body fat DROPPED over last week.

Increased cardio makes an impact

As I mentioned in the previous update, I decided to add cardio back into my routine because I wanted to increase my recovery time (between sets). Well, I added 2 days of Insanity and a day of yoga back into the routine. Let’s just say, it’s certainly having an impact! I only gained .4 lbs of overall weight this week, the lowest yet, even though I continued eating 3700-3800 calories!

The good news? I actually lost .9 lbs of fat and gained 1.3 lbs of muscle. I was a bit surprised by these results so I had Kate check my bodyfat 3x and she confirmed the results are accurate!

I get a lot of questions on how to determine changes in muscle and fat. By checking body fat! We use the Pollack 4 method, which can be done at home with a $6 fat caliper. We’ve recorded a video on “how to measure body fat” which shows you exactly how!

Once you have your body fat %, it’s a 3 step process to determine actual pounds of fat vs. lean tissue:

1) Multiply weight x bodyfat % = total lbs of fat.
2) Subtract the total lbs of fat from your weight to determine lean mass.
3) Each week, calculate these #s to determine an increase/decrease in fat or lean mass!

4 Supplements for adding lean muscle

These are supplements that I’ve used to add 10 lbs of lean muscle in 12 weeks!!!.

No-Bomb (MHP)

Price:

( customer reviews)

0 used & new available from

This supplement is NOT a pre-workout “ENERGY” supplement. For that, see below (C4)

No-Bomb is a pre-workout supplement that increases blood flow by using nitric oxide to expand the capillaries. Why is this important? The more blood flow, the more oxygen you are delivering to the muscle, allowing a more intense contraction.

Additionally, one of the reasons we reach a failure point in an exercise is because of lactic acid build-up in the muscle. You know that burning feeling? That’s caused by lactic acid building up. When you rest in-between sets, that lactic acid is removed from the muscle, allowing you to start another set. As you increase the blood flow to the muscle, you not only provide more oxygen, you also help to remove the lactic acid more quickly.

What I like about this one:

1)      Noticeable increased blood-flow causes a nice “PUMP” in the muscles

2)      Allows you to lift heavier with greater strength

3)      Reduces recovery time between sets by removing lactic-acid build-up

DRAWBACKS:

1)      This is a really great supplement and I haven’t noticed any bad side effects such as indigestion.

WHEN I  USED IT: Pre-workout, only on heavy lifting days, not on cardio days.

C4 (Cellucor)

Cellucor” C4 Extreme Explosive Workouts Fruit Punch 60 Servings”

Price: $38.90

4.5 out of 5 stars (28 customer reviews)

6 used & new available from $30.00

C4 is one of the newest, hottest pre-workout energy supplements on the market. It was so popular and they received so many pre-orders that they had to push back the launch a few weeks to make a larger supply.

What I like about this one:

1)      I can feel the impact within 10 minutes

2)      It actually TASTES GOOD! One of the ONLY pre-workout energy supplements that has a GREAT taste and smell.

3)      It only has 100 mg of caffeine per serving

4)      It only has 5 calories per serving

DRAWBACKS:

1)      It causes my skin to itch like a mild allergic reaction and causes indigestion. Again, it’s mild enough that I’ve used it for 2 months but

WHEN I  USED IT: Pre-workout, only on heavy lifting days, didn’t need it on cardio days.

Prime (USP Labs)

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/usp/prime.html

Prime is a natural testosterone booster that’s designed purely to help boost muscle growth, increase density and improve  strength. This is a mild t-booster that isn’t extreme like some of the supplements that body-builders use.

What I like about this one:

1)      I noticed a definite hardening of my muscles within days. My muscles are rock hard and feel “dense”!

2)      I think my results speak for themselves, 10 lbs of muscle growth in 12 weeks is pretty incredible! I have to give credit to Prime for helping accomplish that.

3)      My strength increased and thus I was able to lift heavier weights in every area

4)      Many t-boosters can cause acne on the back, NOT this one!

DRAWBACKS:

1)      None that I’ve noticed

WHEN I  USED IT: 3x a day, 6 days a week

Pro Gainer (Optimum Nutrition)

Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex Gainer, Double Chocolate, 10.16 Pound

Price: $78.51

4.4 out of 5 stars (87 customer reviews)

23 used & new available from $70.86

Pro gainer is similar to a protein drink except that it also includes carbohydrates and fat. It’s more of a meal replacement/supplement to use when you’re trying to create a calorie surplus. Reaching 3700 calories a day was very difficult for me with just normal food. This became essential to help me reach the calorie and protein goals I needed!

Stats: 650 calories, 85 carbs, 60 protein, 8 fat grams

What I like about this one:

1)      This is a higher quality gainer without a bunch of simple sugars

2)      7 different protein blend including whey, casein and egg

3)      Easier way to eat 640 calories without having a bulging stomach!

4)      Makes it a lot easier to hit high calorie goals!

5)      Great price when using Amazon’s subscribe and save

DRAWBACKS:

1)      It causes mild indigestion, but not as much as other gainers I’ve tried

WHEN I  USED IT: Usually late afternoon, sometimes before bed. Usually 1 serving a day, sometimes 2 if I was really low on calories.

There you have it, the 4 supplements I used to add 10 lbs of muscle in 12 weeks!

Week 11 Update:

Weight: 187.8 lbs (up 1.4 lbs again this week)
Body fat: 10.32% (back in line with what I thought after last week)
Daily Calories: 3750 – 3900
Ratios: 40% / 40% / 20% — 390 g protein / 390 g carb / 86.6 g fat

So for week 11, I’ve gained another 1.4 lbs!! I matched last week’s gains. However, it wasn’t without a scare!

Unexpected Weight Gain

Want to hear something crazy? My sisters were in town and on Saturday we ate at Cafe Rio… it was definitely a cheat meal.

Well something in that food caused several of us to have major bloating. When I did my weekly check in on Sunday morning, I was up 3.5 lbs in 1 week (the most I had ever gained before was 1.4 lbs), my bodyfat % shot up 1.5% for the week as well).

I KNEW that I hadn’t gained that much fat because I simply didn’t eat that many calories. I would have had to eat 10,000 EXTRA calories to gain 3.5 lbs, and I knew I didn’t eat that much.

I did 3 things to flush out this sodium or food allergen (not sure what it was):

  1. Increased my water  intake
  2. Drank Shakeology (great for cleansing the digestive tract)
  3. Increased fiber (oatmeal, broccoli)

Within 24 hours, I was back DOWN 2 lbs, 1% body fat and .5 inch off my waist… my skin was much tighter.

Watch out for sodium or food allergens and if you have some unexpected weight gain, flush it out with water, fiber and Shakeology!

I almost puked!

On Friday, a good friend came to town and we did P90X Legs & Back together. Half way through the workout, I got very nauseous and had to lay down on the ground!   Maybe it was caused by me showing off my new pull-up bar or maybe it was my friend Fabio pushing me to do more pull-ups but wow I got light headed.  While laying down, the thought of quitting for the day was running through my head.

So what’s a P90X Champ supposed to do after getting sick? Go ask mommy for a bottle and end my workout? Heck no! I got back up off the floor and continued the workout until the end!

Measurements

So this week, I made additional gains in a couple of places:
ARMS  – Last week I gained half an inch in my left arm but not in my right. Well this week it balanced out. I gained a quarter inch in my right arm and lost a quarter inch in my left, making them both 14.75 unflexed and 15.75 flexed.

CAVES: I gained .25 in my calves, bringing them up to 15.5″ unflexed

Everything else stayed the same, including my waist! (Good thing!)

“Insane” Cardio!!

Several weeks ago I eliminated all cardio in favor of more lifting days. Well, I can honestly say that it’s catching up with me and negatively affecting my workouts.  I’ve been increasingly sluggish in the workouts and having a hard time keeping up. Muscle gain is cool, but I don’t want to become sluggish. So, I’m adding 2 days of cardio back into my routine.  I wanted to start it off with a bang so I joined my wife and 2 sisters on Saturday night for Insanity – Cardio Interval. WOW – talk about a calorie burn in a short amount of time! 35 minutes, 850 cals… I’ll take it.

My heart rate peaked at 178 (higher than it’s ever gone during P90X – even Plyometrics) and I couldn’t keep up with it 100% but man it felt good!

I’m having trouble walking today but that’s okay!! It just means I got an awesome workout :)

Week 10 Update:

Weight: 186.4 lbs (up 1.4 lbs this week)
Body fat: 10.32% (back in line with what I thought after last week)
Daily Calories: 3600 – 3800
Ratios: 45% / 35% / 20% — 370 g protein / 323 g carb / 82 g fat

In Week 10, I’m happy to report a weight gain of 1.4 lbs (largest amount in 1 week). I also saw some nice gains in several areas!

I saw ¾ inch gain in my right thigh and ½ inch gain in my left thigh. I gained .5 inch in my left arm while my right arm stayed the same (what the heck?).  My waist, calves, forearms and neck stayed the same. What do I attribute the gains to? 3 things:

  1. Creatine kicking in
  2. I switched to higher volume workouts (more reps, lower weight, bigger BURN)
  3. More sleep – I actually got 7 hours of sleep on 3 nights instead of 5-6

Nutrition

I wasn’t too happy with my 40/35/25 last week so I adjusted things to reduce the amount of healthy fat so I was closer to 45/35/20 this week. I also tried really hard to hit 3850 calories but couldn’t hit it!! Still adjusting to eating all this food… it’s tough but the Optimum Nutrition gainer with 640 calories has helped a lot. I’ve also been adding skim milk to most of my protein drinks.

Just to mix things up, I replaced my chest workout this past week with a Tony Horton 1on1 disc called 30/15 – Upper Body Massacre (thanks for the recommendation Cory). I didn’t use any weights, just all push-ups and pull-ups and it BLASTED my chest. I haven’t seen my veins pop that much in a while and I was sore for 3 days!

Hybrid Schedule

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my hybrid schedule and how I’m incorporating P90X PLUS into my routine.

Well, here are some details:

1)      I still follow the P90X original classic schedule, except that I haven’t been doing the rest weeks. So when week 4’s rest week came, I repeated week 3. When week 8’s rest week came, I repeated week 7.

2)      I’ve been mixing in P90X+ discs such as the Interval Plus, Abs/Core Plus and Kenpo Plus. The majority of my workouts are still original P90X Classic.

3)      On chest days, I only do 1 set of pushups to warm up and then I use a bench press.

4)      For the first 8 weeks, my focus was my legs… I worked extra hard on those days and replaced plyometrics with another leg workout.

5)      For the last 6 weeks, I broke it into 3 week blocks with a focus muscle. Right now I’m focusing on my back so I reduced my leg workout to 1x a week and now I’m doing both back workouts with increased intensity.

6)      I’ve essentially removed all cardio for the last 6 weeks.

7)      I’ve KEPT Yoga in the schedule? Why, because it helps in so many ways like stretching me back out, preventing injury and working my core so well (hello, sixpack anyone?).

8)      After this week (11) is done, I will shift my focus to shoulders for the last 3 weeks.

Where am I headed with all this? Long term, I’d love to be 185lbs at 6-7% body fat. With my height and physique, that would be great. For this round, I hope to end up around 192 while keeping my body fat below 10.8%.

Week 9 Update:

Weight: 185lbs (up 1 lb this week)
Body fat: 9.8% (fluctuated back DOWN this week..)
Daily Calories: 3600
Ratios: 40% / 35% / 25% — 320 g protein / 290 g carb / 95 g fat

So for the first 8 weeks, my focus has been on my weakpoint: MY LEGS!!!  I’ve always had skinny legs and I’ve tended to avoid working them out because leg workouts can be brutal! Well, after round 1 of P90X – my cardiovascual capacity has been improved so much, I can handle the brutal leg workouts now.  So what does it mean that I focused on legs? Well, first, I modified the P90X schedule to include 2 leg workouts (instead of just plyometrics + legs/back). Second, on leg nights, I increased the weight a lot and gave it 100% effort.

After 8 weeks, I’ve gained 1.5″ in EACH thigh and although this frontal picture doesn’t show a huge change, my legs feel like tree trunks!!

Top photo is AFTER 8 weeks of focus:

The bottom photo is the “BEFORE”

I actually MISSED a workout this week. I had a project that kept me up until 5 AM (YEP) on Thursday night and when Friday night’s workout rolled around (YOGA – yeah, i’ve really switched the schedule around), it just wasn’t wise to push myself through it. I opted for an additional rest day… which is OKAY when bulking up. Sometimes life throws a curveball and you just have to adjust and move on! No worries!

So this was week 9 and I changed my focus from 2 leg workouts a week to 2 intense BACK workouts. I basically did Back/Biceps twice this week. It’s been really fun with the new pull-up back (see below for a photo).

I started loading up on creatine last week and this week but surprisingly, didn’t see any additional weight gain. As I head into week 10, I’m going to increase my calories to 3850 to spur new growth.

A friend of mine (Cory) recommended that I try some of the Tony Horton 1on1 discs and I think I might incorporate the 30/15 disc for week 10 to blast my back and cause some new muscle confusion :)

See below for my goals, equipment and supplements in Round 2

Goals

My goal for round 2 is to add as much lean muscle as possible while adding as little fat as possible. Creating a calorie surplus is neccesary and the undesired side-affect of “bulking up” is some fat to come along with it. I’m OKAY with this because I have confidence I can lose the fat AFTER round 2.

My WeakPoint: My legs!

I’m targetting my weak point in this round: My Legs!! I have chicken legs and it’s time to do something about it. I’ve been doubling up on leg workouts for the first 8 weeks and having some decent progress so far (you can see my updated measurements on the right side).

Here’s a photo of them starting out:

New Equipment

New Bench

New Weights (Bowflex Selecttech 1090s)

New 50″ TV

New Pull-up Bar

Nutrition

I chose 3600 calories because I calculated my “break even” point at 3000 calories and I wanted to run a 600 calorie surplus, 6 days a week.  I started at 176, and like clock work, I’ve been gaining 1 lb a week to reach 184 after 8 weeks.

My diet

Each day consists of a combination of:

  • Oatmeal
  • Eggs & Veggies
  • Shakeology
  • Granola
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Turkey Bacon
  • Cheese
  • Skim Milk
  • 2 fruit
  • Chicken / Turkey / Fish / Beef
  • Almonds (every day!)
  • Whole grain bread
  • Whole grain tortillas
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Veggies such as brocolli, cauliflower, green beans
  • Salsa
  • Salads with little to no dressing
  • Whey Protein
  • ON Gainer formula
  • P90X Recovery Drink
