Bowflex Selecttech 552s/1090s

Resistance bands can only get your so far. To really work your muscles, you need dumbbells in your hands. During my first round of P90x, I used resistance bands for about the first 45 days and then started using some lighter dumbbells that went up to 25lbs. For day 61-90, I upgraded to the Bowflex 552s. These range from 5 lbs to 52.5 lbs (in 5 lb increments) PER HAND. I love, love, love the bowflex! I had considered the Powerblocks (which are a good alternative) but chose the Bowflex, and I’m glad I did.  Compared to a full set of dumbbells, these are GREAT for saving space. If you’re working out in the living room, these will keep the wife happy (instead of a full weight rack :) ).

They are expensive brand new but your best price will be through amazon.com because of the free shipping. I recommend keeping an eye out on craigslist for a used pair. I got mine for $200 used but they GO FAST so you have to jump on them.

For round 2 of P90x, I’ve upgraded to the 1090s, which range from 5 lbs to 90lbs in each hand! My full review for both of them will be coming soon! Keep in mind, Amazon sells the 1090s as SINGLE dumbbells (not in a pair) so you will need to order *two*.
